A notary public is an individual issued an appointment by the Secretary of the Department of Financial Institutions to serve the public as an impartial witness, performing notarial acts as are allowed or required by law.
Requirements
Wisconsin has two types of notary commissions, with different eligibility requirements for each.
A permanent commission is available only to attorneys licensed to practice law in Wisconsin, who must submit a certificate of good standing from the Wisconsin Supreme Court with their notary application. The permanent commission is automatically revoked if the attorney’s license to practice law in Wisconsin is suspended or revoked, though the attorney may thereafter apply for a four-year commission.
A four-year commission is available to U.S. residents who: (1) are at least 18 years old, (2) have the equivalent of an 8th grade education, (3) are familiar with the duties and responsibility of a notary public, and (4) do not have an arrest or conviction record that affects their ability to hold a position of public trust and otherwise carry out the duties of a notary public.
For More Detailed Information, please read the Notary Public Handbook.
