Apostille for Federally Issued Documents

Federally issued documents such as FBI background checks, documents issued by the Internal Revenue Service, birth certificates of U.S. citizens born abroad, and any other documents that have been issued by a federal agency must receive an apostille from the U.S. Department of State. Please visit their website to read all requirements.

The U.S. Department of State requires that there be a legible signature and title of the officer who signed the document, and a seal from that office. When you are requesting a document from a federal agency, you must let them know it is for foreign use and that the document will require a signature and seal.

If you have further questions about federally issued documents requiring apostilles, please contact the U.S. Department of State Office
