Tips for Talking to Families about Saving for Education
Research suggests that many families of young children, even newborns, are interested in starting to save for their child's future education. Yet, they may be unsure how to get started. Community partners can play a vital role in connecting families to resources that help them to develop a plan. The following points can assist in starting a discussion with families about saving for a loved one's future education expenses and answer common questions they may have.
- It's never too early to talk to a child about their aspirations.
- Most jobs in the future will require education beyond high school. Starting an Edvest 529 account for your child's higher education is a way to encourage them to keep learning and pursue their dreams -- and potentially reduce their need for student loans.
- Small savings can add up over time.
- By starting to save early in a child's life, putting aside even $25 per month could add up to thousands by the time a child graduates high school. The goal is to save what you can within your means, not necessarily to save the entire cost of a child's education.
- Friends and family can help.
- Gifts for birthdays and holidays, or regular contributions from family and friends can help a child's Edvest 529 account grow over time.
- College savings for every future.
- Not sure if your child will go to a four-year college? Funds saved in an Edvest 529 account can also be used for other types of education, like technical college, community college, trade schools, credential and certificate programs, and Registered Apprenticeship programs -- both in Wisconsin and out-of-state.
